Well, all my more philosophical waxings have come crashing down to earth with a decided thud. The cable connecting our digital camera to the computer, which has been working beautifully up until now, has suddenly cut out on us, so we find ourselves alone on the road without one of our primary communication resources.

Tales of Route 66 are always repleat with characters whose rattle-trap cars sit broken down by the side of the road, and it seems like this is the part we are playing tonight, sitting by the side of the info-super-highway with the hood up on our electronic equipment, wondering what to do next and how to patch things together so we can continue the journey.

Happily, there was a fridge full of cheap champagne in our room and so we have found solace in our techno-woe. Earlier on when I was kicking power cables around the room and thrashing my teeth, Helen said, 'The road is what seems real'. And this is true, but in the midst of all the electronic frustration we also recieved email from all over the world wishing us well and that was real too.

Travelling both roads at once is harder than I imagined.
