HELEN'S JOURNAL

Date: 30th April
Time:Post sunset Place:Grand Canyon

It's the last day of April and I'm writing this as the last remnants of sunset spread over the Grand Canyon. I always thought that this was a place one saw only in other people's photo albums. But today I'm in the picture. At noon I saw how the hot sun made the walls of the canyon burn orange. Later I caught my first glimpse of the Colarado River, a turquoise cut glistening miles below and thought, "Look at what you created, how incredible you are." And all day long I wondered what on earth I was going to write- how would I find words good enough to tell you how amazing this place is. We all stand on the rim, trying to capture this piece of the world in our camera frames, knowing even as we click the button that it is an impossible task.

What must it have been like for those who stumbled on this sight for the first time with no prior knowledge of it's existence? It is more than geological- it is truly spiritual.

It has got really dark now. Only Leslie and I are left and the sky is full of stars. The round viewing tower is silhouetted in front of me. In the day the Canyon delights in it's beauty, as mirrors set into the stone of the tower reflect it's shimmering image.
