Adams Street, Chicago and the first Route 66 heralding the start of the journey. Actually, old Route 66 really started on Jackson Blvd., but this is now a one way route and seeing as that way is eastbound, and would take one into the lake...

Any worries about difficulties in filming acquaintances en route were assuaged before we'd left Chicago. I was busy focusing the camera on Starbucks Coffee emporium, when a large friendly face filled the camera frame. I didn't catch his name, but without any coaxing, he launched into a nifty Route 66 song and dance routine. As well as this uplifting entertainment, he informed us that Starbucks was closed on Sundays but that Dunkin Doughnuts provided the best coffee in the whole of Chicago.

And so we hit the road. At times, the two lane Route 66 runs alongside the busy interstate. Two roads running next to each other, both going in the same direction. Yet unlike our sprawling, speeding neighbour, our road was empty and narrow, almost like a bicycle track in comparison.

Occasionally, a narrow dusty road, part of the original old route, now closed, would run alongside us, speeding us on our way.
