To start in true British style I've just got to say something about the weather. My recent visit to Texas to liase with Leslie about the trip was heralded by the worst blizzard conditions that that part of the USA had experienced since 1902. Now that was four months ago, yet I left London on Thursday, sweltering on the Picadilly Line, only to arrive in snow covered Chicago. However, the harsh weather conditions gave me the perfect excuse to indulge in a hearty breakfast of pancakes and maple syrup with 'eggs over easy on the side' at Hillary's Diner. A large, friendly, glass jar of jelly beans stood in the middle of the table with a sign inviting one to, 'Help yourself - please use a spoon!'.

Lawrence took us to The Art Institute this afternoon. One of the walls was covered with small, white, knots of tissue paper. Inside each was a single wish. Looking at their secret white parcels was like Christmas. Some could be opened and read, others hung enticingly, holding the individual longing private in their soft, white folds.
